The University of Liège is a public and pluralistic University. It aims to be open and socially aware, and is there for society and its people.


A few key dates

  XIth Century :      Premise for an intellectual tradition in Liège
  XVth Century :      First degrees awarded to renowned students (Pétrarque…) Liège is the “New
     Athens”
     1496 :      Opening of the “Collège” on the current site - 20 August. This was to be followed
     by the Grand Collège en Ile and the Académie.
     1817 :      Official founding of the University of Liège by William II of the Netherlands.
     The Salle Académique was built in 1824.
     1883 :      Beginnings of the University’s expansion
     1967 :      Start of the transfer of the University to Sart Tilman
